This two-day Script to Screen workshop offers an immersive introduction to the art and craft of visual storytelling, guiding participants through the complete process of creating a short film. Covering essential areas such as scripting, direction, cinematography, and editing, the workshop blends theory with hands-on practice to help participants understand how ideas are transformed into compelling screen narratives. From developing a story and planning shots to shooting a scene and editing it, finally, attendees will gain practical experience in each stage of filmmaking. By the end of the workshop, participants will have collaborated in teams to create a scene while building a strong foundation in both the creative and technical aspects of filmmaking. This will help them lay the foundation for a short film format.
DAY 1:
Forenoon: Basic theory class on filmmaking covering direction and cinematography.
Afternoon: Learning the art of story-telling:
• What is a story?
• Elements of storytelling
• Newspaper story cuttings.
• Forming a story and writing a scene.
DAY 2:
Forenoon: Shooting a scene in groups.
Afternoon: Editing the scene.
Raj Kumar Roy - HOD of Direction and Script Writing
Raj Kumar Roy is a graduate in Direction and Script writing from the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) at Pune. He has been involved with cinema for the past 30 years primarily in the field of advertising and documentary films. His pursuit of cinema brought him into teaching, where he has been teaching and mentoring film making students since the last 15 years. Some of the Institutes where he has taught are the Rama Naidu Film School at Hyderabad, where he has trained and mentored students for over a decade. Subsequently he headed the film department at Chandīgarh University’s Institute of Visual arts, where he steered the undergraduate film programme. Later he joined the K R Narayanan National Institute of Visual arts and sciences, in Kerala, as Head of the Direction and Script writing department. Currently, working as the Head of Direction department at L V Prasad College of Media Studies, Raj Kumar Roy continues to pursue his passion for cinema, and teaching students not only to learn the art and craft of film making, but also to realize their potential to become story tellers and film makers.
