Eligibility

This workshop is open to film and media students, cinematography students, aspiring Directors of Photography, camera assistants, and independent filmmakers who wish to gain hands-on experience with professional cinema cameras. Basic knowledge of photography or videography is preferred, but motivated beginners with an interest in cinematography are also welcome to apply.

Course Description

Day 1 – Introduction to Lighting Fixtures & Basic Lighting
An overview of commonly used lighting fixtures and their functions. Students will learn the fundamentals of light, including intensity, direction, color temperature, and basic lighting setups. The session introduces essential concepts needed to understand how light shapes subjects and creates mood.

Day 2 – Studio Lighting Principles & Practice

Focused on controlled indoor environments, this day covers key studio lighting techniques such as three-point lighting, key–fill–back light relationships, and modifier usage. Participants will gain hands-on experience creating different lighting styles for portraits, interviews, and product shots while understanding how to control shadows and highlights.

Day 3 – Location Lighting Principles & Practice
This session explores lighting for real-world locations using both natural and artificial light sources. Students will learn how to assess available light, use reflectors and portable lights, and adapt lighting setups to suit various shooting conditions. Emphasis is placed on problem-solving, mobility, and achieving consistent results in dynamic environments.

A. Ramesh Kumar, D.F. Tech is an accomplished Indian cinematographer with strong expertise in digital cinematography and professional camera systems. A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, he has worked extensively across feature films, documentaries, advertisements, and television productions, with notable cinematography credits in feature films such as Indian, Independence Day, Thaai Naadu, Thanga Pappa, Uzhavan Magan, and Oomai Vizhigal. Known for his technical precision and strong visual storytelling, he specializes in working with advanced cinema cameras and lighting setups to create compelling cinematic images. With rich industry experience and a passion for teaching, Mr. Ramesh Kumar actively mentors aspiring filmmakers by sharing practical knowledge on camera operation, lighting design, and real-world production workflows, helping students effectively bridge the gap between classroom learning and on-set professionalism.
